New security flaw that would allow torrent network users to control the computer

We have started the year in a fairly worrisome way. Security holes have started to sprout up on all sides and have already been discovered in various processors or operating systems. And as if we didn’t already have enough, now a new security flaw has been discovered that would permit the computer to be controlled by torrent network users, especially by client Transmission. We will go on with more details about it after the gap.

An important security flaw has been detected in the client BitTorrent known as Transmission which allows web pages to implement a malicious code in the computers of some users. This is what investigators from Google Project Zero, regulars in these things, have found. They have pointed out as well that the same vulnerability could affect other torrent clients in the same way.

Serious security flaw for users of the torrent network

The actions taken by the Google Project Zero security investigators are to advise the developer of the security flaw and then to wait 90 days to publish the details on the internet. This is done to give them time to launch a patch and make sure that a good portion of the users install it. However, this case has been different.

The investigator Tavis Ormandy reported it to Transmission privately and even sent them the patch to close the vulnerability. For this reason, they have only waited 40 days to make it public. It is understood that Transmission, since it does not have to develop the patch, does not need the 90 days to put it in circulation. The problem is that they have not yet “seen fit” to apply it.

Transmission has signaled that they are waiting to be able to launch a patched version sooner than later, but they continue to not give a concrete date. They point out that the vulnerability only affects users with remote control activated and that don’t have it controlled with a password. They understand that if we activate the password, we will not be vulnerable to this security flaw.

Returning to vulnerability, we find ourselves again facing the use of the technique known as domain name system rebinding or DNS rebinding. The investigator signals that Transmission can be controlled when the user visits a malicious website. The exploits function without problems in Chrome and Firefox as much as in Windows and Linux.

Finally, it stands out that this security flaw could be present in more clients for torrent downloads. Nevertheless, these clients’ names will not be revealed because of this policy of waiting 90 days after the announcement to the developer and the publication on the internet. Therefore, we recommend that you apply all the patches that your torrent network client launches.

Apple delays iPhone 6 Plus battery replacements due to limited supply

If you are thinking about changing your iPhone 6 Plus’ battery through Apple’s replacement program, you will have to wait over two months to get a battery replacement for €29. These are the orders that the workers at the company’s stores were given, so they are delaying the date for the replacements until late March and early April. The reason is the batteries’ short supply.

A lack of transparency with the iPhones’ slowdown, collective lawsuits across the world for the same reason, planned obsolescence accusations in France, battery explosions in the Apple Store, and now a limited battery supply for one of the brand’s models. Since we discovered that the Cupertino-based company reduces its iPhones’ performance based on their batteries’ health and capacity, the rest of the events and consequences have not ceased to hit the company negatively.

That and the fact that the iPhone X is yet to take off, which is even more worrisome. In this sense, its sales are estimated to be below those of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus together.

The iPhone 6 Plus battery replacements are delayed until April

In an attempt to mend fences, Apple began a battery replacement program earlier this year for those iPhones affected by batterygate (a drop in performance when the battery loses health). We are talking about every model from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 7. A battery replacement for €29, which is much lower than the usual €89.

Said program has already started, but it will not have the same effect for every user. As stated by MacRumors, this is because those interested in changing the iPhone 6 Plus’ battery will have to wait at least until late March or early April.

This can be seen on an internal document sent by the company to all of its stores. Said document also includes other details such as the average time needed to repair the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s Plus, which is supposed to take about two weeks. As for the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the battery replacement should be carried out smoothly.

Limited supply

The reason that led to the iPhone 6 Plus’ battery replacement delay is none other than the lack of stock for this particular battery. An event that has taken the people at Cupertino by surprise again. This is more likely to be a lack of preparation, possibly because the company needed to make a quick decision to appease those affected by the iPhones’ slowdown.

So, if you have an iPhone 6 Plus and were interested in using Apple’s atypical replacement program, it may be worth waiting a few months for this model’s battery stock to stabilize. At the end of the day, Americans plan to keep the battery replacement’s promotional price the same until December 31, 2018. Otherwise, you can always change the battery yourself with the risk that it entails.

Android TV Home arrives at Google Play, all Android Oreo news for Smart TVs

Finally Android TV tastes like Oreo, the guys from Google had shown us Android’s new face for TV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and truth be told, we had to wait very few days to see its final arrival, at least in part.

Why do I say in part? Well, because Mountain View’s giant hasn’t released the Android TV with Android 8.0 Oreo yet, which is expected to arrive in a couple weeks to the first TV’s and set-top-boxes, with the news presented at the CES 2018 on top.

What Google has done is listen to the users, confirming a complete renovation of a very criticized interface that is receiving a deep face-wash, looking now to give more importance to content and lees to apps.

Android TV Home, an Oreo taste for Smart TV’s

The new Android TV interface leaves behind the drawer-like appearance of apps, getting smarter and friendlier to users. The menu organization is new, with channels in the middle and the rest of the fields below, which will be the background of contents and apps.

The apps are now in a vertical carousel with contents on its side, sorted by relevance so that the user doesn’t miss anything of importance. Hence, the general view of the apps and content is enhanced, visualizing first what we use and see more frequently without sacrificing important media content.

Everything is customizable, so both users and developers can set the channels to show specific contents and organize them by subject or interests, and contents can even be sort by our preferences, movies, series, songs, games, etc.

Google Assistant will also be more important at the time of centralizing the content search and all the system is getting smarter so the new “Watch now” section recommends us content according to our taste and our app history, adding also animated previews that look like short movies in the thumbnail of each channel.

Google is looking for faster and lighter Android TV updates

As if this was not enough, Google is changing its strategy radically with Android TV, something that a less volatile than smartphones market maybe needs, since TV’s have a longer life than phones, with a medium renovation period of five years.

So it is of the utmost importance in this case to involve manufacturers in the TV updates and if for this the task of updating needs to be facilitated, Google understands it completely…

Android TV Home y Android TV Core Services are already up on Google Play Store and available to be installed in any TV with Android TV 8.0 Oreo, allowing Google to update fundamental aspects of the OS with a simple app store update, and making manufacturer updates easier, which will be lighter, taking out the core of the system and the user interface, that looks like it will not be customizable for manufacturers. Good news!

We are in 2018 and we continue installing optimizers on Android

Year 2018. The Android medium range hangs around 4 GB of RAM memory + 32 GB of internal memory, the high range dances between 4, 6 and 8 GB of RAM, and it reaches configurations of 64 to 256 GB RAM but… we continue using useless optimizers that do nothing.

It is time to talk, again, of why you shouldn’t install an optimizer on your Android, and of why the users keep installing these applications on their smartphones. If you want to know the whole truth about these cleaners, stay with us.

Why you should never install an optimizer

Learn how RAM works

Before installing applications which clear RAM like crazy, have you stopped to think about how it works? RAM memory, as its name indicates –Random Access Memory-, is a temporary storage, it has access to the system at every moment. It is a working memory, in which is loaded information relating to all processes that the phone has to manage.

If you open WhatsApp, the data will be sent to the RAM memory, and in a later opening of the app, since the process is already loaded, it will open much more quickly. The applications need to work in the background, and although you may not believe it, this does not destroy your battery or anything or the sort, the system already knows about how it must manage RAM. In a separate case is the application may have a null optimization, in which case the system itself cannot manage the resources which it demands correctly, and this is when problems arrive.

Android continues the maxim of “RAM not used, RAM wasted”. You may have 2, 3 and 8 GB of RAM, more than half of these gigabytes will always be occupied. Android distributes processes to maintain the maximum information possible in RAM memory, since it is the best way one has to manage the performance of the terminal.

The problem is that Android is free, and the developers can mess up making applications that demand too many resources. Applications like, for example, Facebook, are much more demanding on resources than they should be. Upon demanding so much of the system, this must alocate a large part of RAM memory to processes like Facebook, and take priority away from others that should be active, but they close so the app can remain open.

These inconsistencies are those which create problems, but the way of putting it right is not to install a cleaner. You will understand very easily, when you understand how a cleaner works, and what its true purpose is.

How cleaners work

The cleaners are basically for cleani… To make money. Full of advertisements, sending information to Chinese servers to make money (not all, but many), consuming more resources than they promise to save. In a nutshell, these applications have some basic functions.

  • Clear the memory cache of your cellphone (the only thing which they do well, and something that you can do yourself from the settings)
  • Clean the big files (this they also do well, and also you can do it yourself)
  • Clean the RAM memory (bad subject)
  • Add a boost to your cellphone (God knows what makes it go faster)
  • Control the battery of your cellphone (they spend more than they save)

The topic is easy, the Cleaners, mainly, delete all applications by force closing, not just removing them from the multitask. This implies an immediate consequence, applications open again to occupy space in the RAM memory, with the consequent expenditure of CPU and RAM.

“The boost which they promise”is no more than the temporary increase in performance which can give a low range phone the closing of processes. However, to the few minutes, all will return to how it was, so it makes litte sense.

What to do to optimize your cellphone

Optimizing cellphones does not happen to use third-party applications, if not because you may yourself be the caretaker. Don’t install bad applications like Facebook, be sure to clean the memory cache once a month, close big games or applications yourself which aren’t going to run later in the background again.

This way, you will save battery, you will improve the performance of your cellphone, and you won’t have problems of any kind, beyond the hardware limitations that your phone may have.

Computer sales have grown after six years, thanks to HP

Sales of computers have grown for the first time in the last six years thank to the good commercial performance of actors like HP and Apple during the last trimester of last year, although with a loss of sales by Lenovo and Asus.

If you have bought yourself a computer this past Christmas it’s possible that it was an HP or HP Omen, the brand that has been able to distribute the most computers on a world-wide level during the whole course of 2017, according to data from the firm IDC, and surpassing for the first time in the last four years the Chinese company Lenovo. Although PC sales have grown by 0.7% in the last trimester compared with the same trimester of the previous year, looking at the whole year, PC sales have experienced a decrease of 0.2% compared with 2016.

The economic recovery, in which the public looks less at the price of the system, and the general good performance of HP computers, has allowed the North American firm to be able to distribute 58.8 million computers in 2017, compared to 54.8 million by Lenovo. Dell came a little behind with the distribution of 41.8 million, and Apple with 19.6 million.

The sale of HP computers has achieved an increase in volume of 8.2% compared to 2016, Lenovo has experienced a decrease of sales by 1.2%, while Asus continues falling with a loss of 10.6% compared to the previous year. The important growth of Apple stands out with Mac sales reaching 19.6 million units distributed and an increase of 5.9% in volume.

It is fitting to mention that this is not official data from each of the companies, but data which IDC manages. The official data from each company will supposedly be made known after some months with the presentation of the distinct financial results of the past fiscal year. What if the best smartphones of 2018 did not have the in-display fingerprint sensor?

What if the best smartphones of 2018 did not have the in-display fingerprint sensor?

We have been waiting for years for the in-display fingerprint sensors, and after seeing them work at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas thanks to Vivo, no one doubts that these fingerprint sensors embedded under the screen will be one of the most important novelties that we will see on high-end Android phones throughout 2018.

It still seems like magical how the sensors work, and they have taken so long to arrive that many people will think that their basic technology is the most complex thing in the world but it is quite simple to understand.

As the guys from Android Police, who talked with Synaptics at the CES, explained it, the screens in our smartphones are permeable to light and the thinner the panel is, the more permeable they are. So OLED screens had every chance of winning in implementing integrated fingerprint sensors before anyone else, since these are the thinnest screens manufactured, at least nowadays. Moreover, an OLED panel leaves space between the tiny leds that make each pixel so the light passes better through it, so everything fitted perfectly to mix together OLED screens and integrated fingerprint sensors.

When projecting a bright enough light through a light-permeable screen, a sensor behind it can see the reflex of the fingerprint on the screen’s surface and use it to create an image of this fingerprint that is readable by a processor or computer, in this case our smartphone.

Explaining it is simple, understanding it gets a bit more complicated and discovering the technology behind it has been even more difficult until Synaptics nailed it. The market was strongly demanding it so it was just a matter of time.

It is impressive but… is this the most we can aspire to in 2018?

Everyone who tried the fingerprint sensor installed in the Vivo smartphone was impressed. It works really fast, its fingerprint reading is trustworthy and it is capable of doing it no matter the finger’s position, as every other sensor installed until today on those ugly holes in the devices.

The only requirement is that the screen must be on and given the fact that OLED screens with ‘always on’ or ‘ambient display’ modes are a reality nowadays, it doesn’t seem like this would be a big issue for the arrival of these integrated sensors.

They are really cool, we want them, let them come to us! We want a clean front but we also want the fingerprint sensor placed as it should be, in the most comfortable place, the interior of the front panel.

But, is this the most we can aspire to this year in the luxury Androids? Maybe not, because it is likely that screen-integrated fingerprint sensors are late to their date with innovation in terms of biometric authentication.

An iteration of a leader smartphone maybe needs something more

Yesterday we were talking about this, after LG’s change of strategy, which for better or for worse will stop updating their smartphones annually, as the main manufacturers have been doing almost like a system, and start launching a new high range smartphone when it’s necessary and when there are updates that justify it.

It is true that finally implementing the fingerprint sensor under the front screen, tidying up the design of the devices, is something that we were all expecting, but after the arrival of Face ID and other biometric authentication systems, maybe this technology is too late and it doesn’t justify a new top of the range smartphone. Would you buy a Galaxy S9 if it was identical to the S8 except for a fingerprint sensor under the screen? Probably most of you wouldn’t, since it’s a lot of money…

Face authentication is a technology just as comfortable and even though it needs to work on its trustworthiness it will definitely improve in this matter. Also, it won’t be a negative experience for any user to look at his or her smartphone to unlock it, so Face ID has already won in this field.

This year, most manufacturers will definitely try to convince us that under-the-screen-integrated fingerprint sensors are an important reason to update our device, but sooner or later they will face the dilemma of whether to follow Apple in integrating Face Id, ignoring fingerprint sensors or not, whether they are integrated or outside sensors. Same happens with the audio-jack.

The debate is on, so we’ll be waiting for your opinions… In my case, I think it’s better to have more than less, so better to stay with the fingerprint sensor despite the arrival of a Face ID to Android.

Check it out! The iPhone SE 2 could come early in the year 2018

Recently we have entered into good news that truly will please many, and boy is it good news. With this, those of Cupertino demonstrate to us that their surprises do not stop, and more for the next year: The iPhone SE 2 could come in 2018. How does the idea sound to you?

The iPhone SE 2 could come at the start of 2018

The iPhone SE 2 could be made by one of the most important companies in Taiwan, Wistron, from their factory located in Bengaluru, India.

While it’s true, since Apple launched the iPhone SE it became a cellphone that stands out as being very powerful and very popular. So if you are one of those fanatics that adore the first version of this smartphone, already you can hope for their next version because it will probably be able to arrive in the next year.

That which we are sure of is that this next cellphone will have good characteristics, and they can verify some rumors that are centered on the iPhone SE 2 could rely on border to border screen similar to the iPhone X. Although we would have to expect its launch next year to know if this rumor is true.

Other important characteristics which this cellphone will continue to rely on, are that it will continue offering the same LCD screen of as little as 4 inches, just like the Home button with the Touch ID function.

Possible specifications of the iPhone SE 2

Moreover, the external components of these cellphones will have improvements which offer greater speed. Furthermore, it will provide an A10 Fusion chip and of course, a battery more powerful than 1700mAH.

As you know, the iPhone SE has not been updated since its launch to the market. However, Apple doubled its storage in the month of march to 64GB and 128GB with the purpose of satisfying the needs of all their fans.

With nothing more to say, this news that the iPhone SE 2 could arrive in 2018 has had us very satisfied and waiting for that grand day. Although through the web portal Economic Daily News, those of Cupertino will make this launch for the first half of next year.

The 2018 iPad Pro could integrate Face ID

Face ID made its appearance with the recent presentation of the iPhone X and it appeared to indicate that this new technology is destined to make a part of all future Apple products. For the moment, the next devices which are believed will be integrated are the new models of iPad Pro which will arrive this coming year.

This is what Ming-Chi Kuo says, the popular analyst of the KGI Securities company which in the past has made successfull predictions about the Cupertino company, which in a note for the public investors this morning has signalled that the 2018 iPad Pro will come equipped with Cameras with TrueDepth technology and will support biometric identification through Face ID.

If you do not know what Face ID is, it is a new facial recognition function developed by Apple and integrated in the iPhone X, capable of unlocking the cellphone with the face of the user. It is based on the cameras with TrueDepth technology that are found in the top part of the smartphone panel, which are equipped with infrared, an IR illuminator and a point projector. Thanks to this, the system can compose a detailed map of the face of the owner and makes photos in 3D to be able to identify them.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, at first there will be only the iPad Pro as the next product in integrating the facial identification, since it is the signature tablet of Apple. Furthermore, also consider that the new models of 2018 iPhones also will adopt TrueDepth cameras.

We foresee that the iOS devices that will equip TrueDepth cameras in 2018 will include the iPhone X and the new models of the iPhone and iPad”, the analyst has said. “For this reason, we believe that more developers will pay attention to the TrueDepth cameras and to the related facial recognition apps”. We hope that the biggest Apple promotion of the applications related with facial recognization encourages Android to dedicate more resources to the developement of apps and hardware of facial recognition.
